In January of 2010 in a meeting with Tunde Akinyele . Tunde is running for a Georgia state judge seat and is currently the Senior Assistant District Attorney in Dekalb County Georgia. A county with a budget of $583,000,000.00 this year. The conversation was about Dekalb being a very typical county , almost like a micro America. One thing that was clear is that the county has a budget problem. And yes that is typical.
Dekalb is facing a shortfall of about $50,000,000.00. Tunde ,a leader with answers to problems said theway we punish people that are caught with less than an ounce of marijuana could fix it tomorrow. He has asked state leaders to allow this.
You see the judicial budget is 51% of Dekalb’s overall budget. And 20% of that goes to punish these offenders. Once they are put into the system it is so costly. It is about 10% of their total budget. That is $58,300,000.00. Giving them an extra $8,300,000.00 to use any way they chose. All they have to do is be able to write a $500.00 citation instead of incarceration. This cuts the 10% ,makes $500.00 ,and rules out any law suits that happen while these offenders are in Dekalb’s custody. They average paying $50,000.00 per suit.
Now for the reason for the meeting with him.American Angel Works is a nonprofit that works in all fifty states helping offenders with their community service hours. They work with probation officers ,courts ,and individuals helping offenders complete their community service hours with us. If cities and counties would write citations and give community service hours to these offenders everyone wins. The budgets are cut ,revenue is up ,the offender isn’t strapped with fees ,bonds ,etc ,the courts are freed up to take care of real crime ,and best of all at the end of all this a special child gets life changing therapy and a smile that lasts forever.
