Saving those pet projects that matter to groups and citizens If you are a mayor ,commissioner , sheriff ,etc you are dealing with a budget shortfall. There are groups of voters and individuals worried about what they fear you will have to cut to keep basic services going. These groups and people can’t understand the budget enough to see anything other than what they want to see. And you can’t expect much more out of them.
First looking at ways to save is really quite simple. Most monies are spent on the judicial budgets. That becomes a much larger percentage if you include Fire and Rescue in with judicial. So the judicial percentage of most budgets will be the biggest part.
Looking at ways to cut. The way certain crimes are punished is first on the list. Citations are revenue and incarcerations are debts. So take a look at why you are arresting people on things that you can issue a citation. In Gwinnett County Georgia if people with under an ounce of marijuana were issued a citation for $500.00 instead of being arrested it would save over 100 million dollars or about 10% of the entire budget. You are not legalizing it ,you are simply punishing it in a way to save the Libraries ,parks, etc. You can even step up patrols. That is just one thing.
Another innovative way to save just as much is changing the way certain non violent crimes are punished. American angel Works is referenced at the bottom of this press release. They are a foundation that works with families, co ops, and churches every state by supporting families and first responders all over the country. How they are funded is the trick to balancing fiscal budgets and saving those pet programs and projects that your voters love so much.
A person is arrested for DUI. They go to court and are sentenced to 30 days in jail at $50.00 per day plus medical and possible law suits if they are injured while a guest. That is a huge cost when we look at the non violent offenders that come and go.
American Angel Works allows them to work off community service hours. Their program costs nothing for the courts to implement and instead of spending money the county ,or city spent nothing. The person sentenced to community service can keep their job ,dignity, and learn a lesson ,the entity saves thousands ,and a helped at the same time. Wrap all this up with a family or co op in the city or county’s community is the one that will be supported by the offenders efforts and you have a platform to run on in some trying times.
